Newsletter Articles
From the Pen of the Principal, Robert Corboy
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As I write this article for the newsletter, I am acutely aware of the changing conditions that may occur between now and when you read this article, hence the speed that our circumstances can change with this Delta variant. Today (Tuesday morning), we have just recorded 16 new cases in Queensland, a new COVID-19 case in north Queensland and a positive case that was in our region late last week. The Southeast remains in lockdown until Sunday, while we as a College are currently seeking Queensland Health advice and undertaking contingency planning.
I would like to thank our families who have been in touch with the school, seeking advice around family members returning from places that have gone into lockdown, to questions pertaining to online learning and the variety of ‘what if’ scenarios. Our goal, similar to last year is to follow Queensland Health directives, keep our community constantly informed with the latest information available, and maintain the teaching and learning experience for our students. We may need to pivot in response to changing circumstances, however we will communicate with students and parents when necessary. If you have any questions, I encourage you to contact the College.
Once again thank you for the way which you as parents and caregivers are working with our staff to support your son’s care and learning during these uncertain times. Hopefully we continue as ‘normal’ with minimal impact to our daily operations; only time will tell.
Thank you and congratulations to the following:
- Mr Oram, Ms Eldershaw, Mr Simpson and the Cattle Club attending the Sarina Show over the weekend.
- Matt Cullen and Mrs Waretini and the teams who competed in the Western 7’s in Emerald over the weekend. They had a wonderful experience.
- Mr Ingram and the Drumline students who played at last week’s CWA event in Mt Larcom.
- Students who competed in Rotary Quiz and Debating last week.
- All involved in the Grandparents Day last Friday - especially Mrs Ludcke, Mrs Hedges, the Music department, and our musicians. It was well attended and well received due to the wonderful chaperone’s who were on call to showcase this wonderful community to their grandparents.
- AFL teams who competed in the Rockhampton finals this week against Chanel College. Both Junior (39-19) and Senior (110-10) teams were victorious and will travel to Townsville to compete in the North Queensland Championships.
- Aaron Payne and Cowboys Challenge Cup teams who played in Mackay last week and will play again this week. Further details available in the Sports News.
- Academic Award recipients who were acknowledged on assembly this Wednesday.
Unfortunately, due to Covid the following events have been postponed or cancelled
- Year 11 Leadership camp for this week.
- Cultural Dancing event that was to be held at SBC for local Primary and Kindergarten students.
- Cattle Club - EKKA trip.
Upcoming events
- Year 10 Subject selection on Thursday and Friday – Our Year 10’s will be out of regular classes.
- Year 8/9 BBQ Monday 9 August.
God bless

Residential News
Dear parents and friends,
As many of you would already know, Fr Pius is away this term on well earnt long-service leave. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Sam Muir, and I am the Acting Assistant Principal Residential for Term 3, while Fr Pius is away. Please feel free to contact me on muirs@sbc.qld.edu.au or 0447219046.
It has been a great first two weeks of the term in residence. The boys have all returned after the break with excellent attitudes and continually growing levels of maturity and respect towards, themselves, others, and the SBC community. It is great to see.
This term we are focused on the concepts of respect and what it means to be a man, an adult. At assembly we looked at the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling, please see the link below if you are interested in reading the poem. In residence it is our job to help the boys before us grow into good, strong minded individuals. Our expectation is that our boarders, work towards that end too. The way we speak, act and treat others says a lot about us. Across the first two weeks of term, it has been great to witness numerous boarders treating others with respect and dignity, speaking maturely, handling situations responsibly, looking after themselves, each other, and the environment. Well done to all of you who have been helpful, kind, and respectful.

REACH
The REACH program is an essential part of our operations in boarding. It allows parents, students, and residences to be fully aware of student movements, especially for weekend leave and other overnight activities. It is fully operational. Please remember to complete leave forms for when your son intends to go off campus. Boarders can complete the leave form, however, for the leave to go ahead both the parent and I need to approve it. If you are having issues with REACH, please advise the boarding office.
Activities
The boarding residences enjoyed quite a busy end to Term 2, with a significant variety of activities available for the boys.
The Junior School Dance with Girls Grammar was very popular, where the boys played a variety of games and participated in dance-offs.
Other more local events have included:
- Beach Tug-O-War
- Ross Creek and Causeway Fishing
- Kemp Hill Hike and BBQ
- Regular bike afternoons and gym sessions
- Yeppoon Show
- Rockhampton Show
- Movie nights at BCC Rockhampton for both Juniors and Seniors

Term 3 is already starting to have a full activities calendar planned. The boys are currently registering for an inter-grade touch footy competition which will commence Monday of Week 4.
Senior boys have also been to Yeppoon Beach for a touch footy game and afternoon BBQ with Girls Grammar School. Juniors will be participating in a similar gathering this Sunday morning.
The junior boys have also enjoyed recent kite-flying opportunities at Yeppoon Beach.
Take care,
Sam Muir
Music News
My how time flies when your having fun! I think it just flies, or do I need a shower?
What a huge first two terms with students at State Honours Ensemble Programs “SHEP”. Students have included Declan Dunne, Jesse Emery, William Lees, Ashton Ryan, Jack Simpkins, Kaleb Ballment and Cooper Lee at SHEP Rockhampton and Capricornia. Xavier Craggs travelled to participate in the Darling Downs program. There was also ANZAC Day, Assemblies, College Masses, Regional Combined Masses, School Visits and the Combined College Musical “The Music Man” staring Elijah Edwards and Buddy Kemp in the title role and all that entails. Seeing the band program with Year 7 enrolments for this year is very exciting, with those boys progressing amazingly with Miss Priddle.
Term 3 started with preparing our video participation in the Queensland Catholic Music Festival QCMF. Normally we would be loading the bus and heading off at this time of the year. Hopefully we will reach that vaccination point that will allow us to once again travel with the boys in 2022.
We reduced our contribution of performances from the usual 10 or so, but wanted to support the organisers, so we put forward the Combined Band boys under Miss Priddle, two Contemporary Bands made up of boys from Years 8 and 10 as well as a Combined Drumline from Mr Walker and the Combined Jazz Band with Mrs Ballment and Mrs du Plessis. This was all filmed on Sunday July 18, and will be available for viewing August 14-15 from the Villa Nova QCMF web site, as they are the annual hosts of the event.
We also celebrated Mass for the 200 year celebration of Catholic Education, with 30 students making up the musicians and singers from all colleges taking front and centre.
The Drumline has been very busy this past week with a performance at the ABC Capricornia 90th year celebration on Quay Street with an early start. Footage of the morning can be found on the ABC Capricornia Facebook page. Looking good Jasper Tibbett. They followed this up with a performance at St Benedict’s with the girls from STU, and then again the same morning at our Grandparents Morning Tea held at SBC. That was not the end of it all though as they rose early Saturday morning to travel to Mt Larcom where they were joined by STU girls, and they all helped with the celebration of the 90 years of QCWA in Mt Larcom.
Sunday 8th August, 2pm at St Joseph’s Cathedral Rockhampton is a sacred concert “Lift up your Voice to the Lord” featuring talent from Capricorn Coast and schools. Jordan King and Kyden Ajisaka will be joining many other talented students from across the coast for this beautiful afternoon of music. It will be a treat and I hope you can come along. Huge thanks to Tink Boyd and others who are making this event come together.
Sunday 29th August, is our Sunday on the Lawn with an open mic session and many of our students putting their talents on show. We really hope you can come along and support this afternoon of music.
Friday September 10th Battle of the Bands will be at the Pilbeam Theatre with two of our College bands participating. The senior group comprises Kyden Ajisaka on electric guitar and lead, Kaleb Ballment on guitar and vocals, Lachlan Farrington on keyboard, Jordan King on vocals, McKenzie O’Connor on ukulele and electric guitar, Cassidy Simpson on electric guitar, Jasper Tibbet on percussion, Charlie Willis on bass. The Year 8 band comprises Camron Bromley on guitar and vocals, Jesse Emery on electric, guitar, lead guitar and vocals, Samuel Janes on percussion, William Lees on vocals, Toby Simpkins on bass guitar and Patrick Waller on electric and lead guitar. Tickets will go on sale through the Pilbeam Theatre web site soon so see you there.

Director of Sport Report
In what can only be described as a frantic few weeks to start the term, it’s great to see the fantastic results and high participation levels across a wide range of sports. The Rugby League season is travelling along nicely with all teams performing well in their respective divisions. Our SBC Athletics team also made their way up to Rockhampton recently to trial for a spot in the Rockhampton and District team. After a solid two days of competition twenty-six SBC students were selected in the R&D team to compete at the Capricornia Trials in Mackay on August 23 and 24. Both our Junior and Senior AFL teams were also too strong for Chanel College on Monday in the CQ Regional Final, and now move on to the next stage - the NQ Regional Finals next Wednesday. The Cowboys Challenge and Aaron Payne Cup also continues this week and next week with games against Ignatius Park College, Mercy College and St Patrick’s College. Both teams are progressing nicely under Mr Lawrence and Mr Minto’s guidance. Over the weekend we had two teams (U13s & U15s) make their way out to Emerald to take part in the Western 7s Rugby Carnival. Both teams played with great spirit and comradery over the two days with the U13s coming away as Runners Up in their division. Thanks to Mr Cullen, Mrs Waretini and Mr Waretini for their assistance in making this possible. Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge the fine work that Mr Minto is currently doing in the Sports Administration Department, as a lot of the competitions listed above are extremely dynamic and draws are generally sent or changed at the last minute with very little turn-around time. It can be extremely challenging at times, and the time and effort he puts into this can not be underestimated. I’d also like to thank all the parents for your support and understanding in this area.

Rugby League Report
Rockhampton Interschool Rugby League:
Round 3 of the Interschool Rugby League season was another great week for St Brendan’s College.
Here are this week’s top 3 moments in Rugby League.
- The Year 7D team coached by Will Gardner, recorded their first win of the season with a massive 42-10 victory over TCC3. Harold Kris and Seth Young were constant threats to the opposition.
- The Year 10C team coached by Shane Peers, overcame an 18-0 half time deficit to fight their way back into the game and record an 18 all draw.
- The Open Fourths team coached by Jonathan Gill and Shane Yore, made up of only Year 11 students, recorded their 2nd win over a tough Emmaus 2nds side. Hendrikus Voight and Ky Pambid continued their good form each crossing for tries.
Week 3 Rugby League Results:
APC and Cowboys Challenge
Teams in the Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge took to the Mackay Junior Rugby League fields last week to take on Townsville heavyweights Kirwan State High School in round one of the cross over challenge. Going into the games with strong wins over Emmaus, both teams were ready for the challenge with a good preparation helping their confidence. Our Cowboys Challenge side were first to play and it was a game for the ages. With scores level with limited time on the clock Banjo Walker would provide the knockout blow snapping a field goal to forge ahead 17 – 16 and take the win. Strong performers on the day were Jake Peirce and Tommy Green along with U15 Qld rep Tavita Penaia. In the Opens game our boys fought hard in the first half with scores locked at 6 all until just before the half time break. It was a mistake that would lead to Kirwans second try and the scores with both teams in the sheds would be 12 – 6. Into the second half and a gluttony of errors from our boys would prove costly as Kirwan posted back to back tries In quick succession. With the score now 24 – 6 our boys would defend for large chunks of the second half on the back of poor discipline. As the clock wound down the bears scored another and our boys would score as well to bring the final score to 31 – 12 at full time. This week both teams travel North again to take on Ignatius Park at Mackay Brothers fields. Good luck boys.
