26 October 2023
From the Pen of the Principal, Rob Corboy
Dear St Brendan’s Community
What an eventful week it has been. Traditionally, it holds great significance in the College calendar, and this year was no exception. It was a week filled with celebration and thanks.
The week kicked off with the Co-Curricular Awards, which recognised a significant part of the students' experiences at the College. The wide range of activities and engagements that our boys have been involved in was truly impressive. Representing the College in the green and gold, regardless of the level or competition, is a special achievement. As a corner stone of our co-curricular program is the Arts, and it was inspiring to witness what had been offered and achieved in one calendar year. We all must rightfully ‘tip our hats’ in acknowledgement to the dedication of all the staff who are the engine room behind these opportunities. Congratulations to all!
Wednesday evening marked our Academic Awards night, once again, a record number of students received awards. As our primary focus, it was heartening to witness the level of dedication and success among our students in their studies. The significant effort that goes into organising this event behind the scenes is truly inspiring. Congratulations to all our award recipients and to the hardworking staff who make it happen.
Finally, on Friday, we bid farewell to our Year 12 students. While external exams commence this week, we took a moment to celebrate this cohort in a memorable way. Raising a child truly requires a community effort, and Friday was a celebration of exactly that. Congratulations are in order, first and foremost, to the graduating Class of 2023 for reaching this significant milestone, as well as to their first and ongoing educators - their family, and finally to the entire community of St Brendan’s.

Kind regards
Rob Corboy
Thank you

Vocational Education News (Yr 11 Certificate Courses for 2024)
Letters to Year 10 families will be emailed out by the end of the week, to collect student USI information. From 1 January 2015 the Australian Government requires all students undertaking Vocational Education Training (VET) to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a life-long 10-digit number and letter identifier that allows students to access their VET records and results. From 2016 and beyond a transcript of results can be accessed online via the USI register linked below. It is compulsory that all students that undertake a VET qualification at the College create a USI.
Year 10 students are required to complete the steps set out in the letter. If unable to do the application at home, students can see Miss Newsome in AT3 at the College, who can assist them. Please be sure to keep an eye on your emails for the USI letter.

Congratulations to Toby Simpkins who was selected to participate in “Destination Doctor” this month. This is an event run by the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (UQRCS), in partnership with CQUniversity, Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service, and the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, where he had the chance to immerse himself in a day of hands-on clinical skills session and gain insight from staff and students about the Regional Medical Pathway program.
Congratulations to Matthew Kershaw who was selected to participate in the UQ Young Change Makers Program in November. The program is a 4-day experience that presents Year 11 students with an exciting opportunity for academic extension and enrichment and is centered around igniting young change makers’ passions for leadership, academic achievement and community development in today’s global society.
Congratulations to Alex Hoad and Darcy Ryan who were successful in their application to participate in upcoming Army and Air Force (respectively) Familiarisation Programs that provide them with an introduction to defence force careers, capability and training procedures.
Thank you to TMR, Construction Skills Qld, Fulton Hogan, Acconia, BMD, and Bielby for coming and speaking with the boys about upcoming training and employment opportunities on the Rockhampton Ring Road and Rocky to Gladstone Pipeline Projects.
Thank you once again to Larissa Burnett and the JCU team for helping us celebrate World Teachers’ Day with cupcakes. JCU are a great supporter of the college and each year provide many opportunities for our students travelling down the University path.

Sports News
Since our last newsletter instalment, we have had students representing their region in track and field at the Queensland School’s Track & Field Championships, strutting their stuff on the sand at the CQ Interschool Surf League at Emu Park, splashing their way to victory in the pool at Water Polo and spiking the opposition in the Interschool Volleyball competition.
Track & Field
The College had a small contingent of students representing the Capricornia Region at the recent Queensland School’s Championships held in Brisbane during week 2 of the term. For some it was an opportunity to gain some valuable experience, whilst for others, state medals were the goal. Congratulations to all who competed with special mention to the following students.
Tyler Slater - 8th 12yrs Shot Put - 11.47m
Zane Keiler - 2nd 13yrs Shot Put - 14m, 5th 13yrs Discus - 36.86m
Khobi Scanlan - 9th 14yrs 3,000m - 9:58.95, 11th 14yrs 1,500m - 4:32.16
When more results come to hand, achievements will be publicised.
CQ Surf League
Our resident surf lifesavers took to the sand and water on Friday 20 October at the annual CQ Interschool Surf League competition hosted by Emu Park SLSC. We had a large team this year with approximately 20 students taking part in a range of events, including beach flags, sprints, surf races, board races, ironman races and team events such as surf teams, cameron relays and beach relays. The SBC Surf League team swam, paddled and ran themselves to a stand still, eventually claiming 4th place overall. Not a bad result considering most schools have two genders to help accrue points. Congratulations to the entire team, and thank you to Mr Prince for his efforts throughout the day. Please see some of the individual results listed below.
Henry McGilvray - 1st U13 Board, 2nd U13 Ironman
Hugo Genninges - 2nd U13 Beach Flags
Aiden Steig - 1st U15 Board
Isaac Thomas - 1st U15 Beach Sprint
Caden Parsons - 3rd 16+ Surf Race, 1st Board, 2nd Ironman.
Fletcher Scanlan - 3rd 16+ Board, 3rd Ironman, 2nd Beach Sprint, 2nd Beach Flags, 16+ Age Champion.

Soctober
Socktober is an initiative designed to raise money for Catholic mission. Catholic mission is the Pope's official mission agency and every year we are called, as a Catholic community, to raise money to help those most affected by disadvantage in our world.
Embracing the theme Socktober, this year St Brendan’s is going to do two things:
- CLICK HERE to donate…every cent counts.
- Students are encouraged to participate in a soccer penalty shootout in the hall, where for a gold coin donation, they can try and get a goal and win prizes. This will happen on 1 November.
